Scott Samuelson Joins L&A, Inc.

Previously, Mr. Samuelson was an Executive with NNSA, retiring in October 2014 with over 30 years of federal service. Mr. Samuelson’s experience at NNSA included serving as federal project manager for the National Ignition Facility Project, and conducting reviews of some of the more challenging NNSA projects, including UPF.

L&A Extends Commitment To Engineering Scholarships at Penn State University

Longenecker & Associates, Inc., (L&A) announced today that it will extend for 5 years its scholarship support for students in Engineering Science and Mechanics at the Pennsylvania State University.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Over the past five years, scholarships have been awarded to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding graduate and undergraduate students, pursuing degrees in Engineering Science and Mechanics in the College of Engineering at Penn State’s University Park Campus. Scholarship recipients have pursued careers in a range of disciplines including nonproliferation, national security, commercial power, and medicine.

In extending the scholarships, John Longenecker, L&A’s President stated “Our team’s goal with this contribution is to continue to provide financial assistance to promising engineering students who might otherwise not be able to complete their degrees. These people are critical to keeping our country and our economy strong for the future.”

Mark Baca Joins L&A, Inc.

Longenecker & Associates, Inc. announced today that Mark C. Baca joined L&A as a Senior Associate focused on NNSA Programs, effective May 27, 2014.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Previously, Mr. Baca was an Executive with NNSA, retiring in January 2009 with over 30 years of federal service. During his tenure with DOE and NNSA he served as the Deputy Director of Weapon Programs Division and Director of Weapons Surety Division, and held various other technical and managerial positions in the DOE Albuquerque Operations Office. Prior to retiring he served as the Associate Director of the Office of Technical Services at the NNSA Service Center. After retirement he has provided consulting services to government contractors and private companies in the areas of competition strategies, management assessment, and quality assurance policy and procedures.

Tracy Mustin Joins L&A, Inc. Board

Longenecker & Associates, Inc. announced today that Tracy Mustin has been named to the company’s Strategic Advisory Board.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Ms. Mustin is an independent consultant, and previously served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management from August 2011 until her retirement from federal service in January 2014. In this position, Tracy was responsible for the policy direction, management, and execution of the Department of Energy’s nuclear cleanup portfolio, the largest environmental cleanup program in the world –with an annual budget of over $5.5 Billion.

Tracy joined the Department of Energy in 1991 and until 2003, managed Environmental Management programs to stabilize nuclear-contaminated buildings at the Rocky Flats Plant; prepare, package and transport foreign research reactor spent nuclear fuel from over 50 countries around the world to the United States; and transport nuclear and other radioactive materials from DOE sites to storage and disposal facilities.

From 2003 until 2011, Tracy served in a variety of leadership roles in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), including as the Chief of Staff to the Administrator of NNSA. As the Director of the Second Line of Defense Program, Tracy and her team provided equipment, training, and technical support to over 50 countries to enhance their capabilities to detect and deter illicit trafficking of nuclear and radiological material across international borders including land border crossings, airports and seaports. This program played an important role in US efforts to combat nuclear terrorism.

Ms. Mustin served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from 1984-1991 and then as a reserve officer. She retired as a Captain in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps in October 2009.

Tracy was the recipient of the Partnership for Public Service’s Service to America Medal for Homeland Security in 2007, which recognized her outstanding leadership in the area nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Ms. Mustin graduated from North Carolina State University in 1984 and holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering.

L&A Awards Scholarships at WM 2014 Symposium

Longenecker & Associates, Inc. awarded scholarships to Michele Hendrickson and Michelle Newcomer on March 4, 2014 at the Waste Management 2014 Symposium in Phoenix, AZ.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Michele Hendrickson serves the state of Washington as a professional engineer in its nuclear waste program. She has an MS in environmental engineering from Washington State University, and a BS in professional chemistry from the University of Idaho. Michelle’s focus is on building better Hanford barriers for safe long-term containment of highly toxic nuclear waste throughout the Hanford site.

Michelle Newcomer is a second year PhD student at UC Berkeley in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, specializing in groundwater research. Michelle received her MS degree in geosciences at San Francisco State University, and has worked extensively on groundwater related research had NASA Ames research Center.

Carol A. Johnson Joins L&A, Inc. Board

Ms. Johnson is an independent consultant, and previously served as President of Washington Closure Hanford, LLC; Executive Director Infrastructure of URS Sellafield Limited; Director Infrastructure at Idaho National Laboratory; Director of the LANL Advisor Program; and Business Manager of the Operations Business Unit at Westinghouse Savannah River Company.

Stephen Mellington Joins L&A, Inc.

Longenecker & Associates, Inc. announced today that Stephen Mellington has joined L&A in the position of Senior Associate.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Mr. Mellington completed a very prestigious 35 year government career in 2012. As a Senior Executive with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) he served as the manager of the NNSA’s Nevada Site Office (NSO) in Las Vegas. In that position he was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the 1360-square-mile Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) formally known as the Nevada Test Site. Mr. Mellington managed NNSA initiatives in stockpile stewardship and management, nuclear test readiness, nuclear operations, crisis management, nonproliferation and treaty verification, environmental management and other science and technology activities.

Prior to assuming this position Mr. Mellington served as the Assistant Manager for Environmental Management (AMEM) with the NSO. As the AMEM, Mellington was responsible for overseeing and implementing the Environmental Management (EM) program at the NNSS and Tonopah Test Range. The program consists of characterization and remediation of contamination that resulted from past nuclear testing and the management of facilities for the disposal of Low-Level and Mixed Low-Level Waste as well as the storage of Transuranic Waste.

Mr. Mellington served as the Nevada Site Office Integrated Safety Management (ISM) Champion and also served as the Federal Technical Capability Parcel Agent responsible for ensuring the technical excellence of the federal staff.

Mr. Mellington received the NNSA Administrator’s Award of Excellence in 2006 and in 2012.

Before joining Nevada Site Office, he worked ten years with the Bureau of Land Management as District Planning Coordinator and served as Team Leader for numerous Environmental Impact Statements in Nevada. His federal career began in 1977 with Bureau of Land Management in Winnemucca, Nevada.

Mr. Mellington is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in soils science from the University of Maryland.
